Analysis of Cascading Failures in Power Networks
نویسندگان
چکیده
This thesis studies the characteristics of cascading failures in a simulated linear swingequation model for simple power networks. The model transitions from displaying only small average failure size to undergoing large average failure size as the loading of the system is increased. For some parameter values, the transition region becomes critical, and it exhibits failures of all sizes whose distribution is approximated by power-laws. Comparisons of the average failure size are made for networks with different generator/load configurations, transmission line densities, system sizes, frequency deviation thresholds, and angle thresholds. Connections with the literature on power-law distributions and criticality are discussed. Thesis Supervisor: George C. Verghese Title: Professor of Electrical Engineering

Topological Analysis and Mitigation Strategies for Cascading Failures in Power Grid Networks
Recently, there has been a growing concern about the overload status of the power grid networks, and the increasing possibility of cascading failures. Many researchers have studied these networks to provide design guidelines for more robust power grids. Topological analysis is one of the components of system analysis for its robustness. This paper presents a complex systems analysis of power gr...
متن کاملAddressing vulnerability to cascading failure against intelligent adversaries in power networks
The blackout of August 14, 2003, showed that electric power grids are vulnerable to cascading failure. Since then, numerous methods of vulnerability analysis have been developed to help the owners and operators of power networks and other infrastructure systems protect them against possible catastrophic events (including attacks by intelligent adversaries). With cascading failures, even small a...
متن کاملLoad-based cascading failure analysis in finite Erdös-Rényi random networks
Large-scale cascading failures could be triggered by very few initial failures, which lead to serious damages in complex networks. This paper presents a load-based cascade model to analyze the vulnerability of a complex system such as the power grid under a random single-node attack, where the Erdös-Rényi (ER) random graph is used as the network model since it captures the exponential degree di...

Abstract: Blackouts are among the main threats to the security of electric power systems. Cascading failures are known as the most important agent for creating blackouts. Transmission lines are the basic equipment of power networks that their outage can make subsequent cascading outages. In this paper, based on the application of decision tree a new approach is proposed for online identificatio...
متن کاملEvaluating the potential of cascading failure occurrence due to line outage in power systems by information theory method and radial base functions
In power systems, a connected topology is created to increase reliability and economic performance. Increasing dimensions of power systems on the one hand and the need to continuously monitor power systems for secure operation on the other challenge the evaluation of power system security. In such conditions, due to economic conditions and considering the fast growth of consumers in a power sys...
متن کاملDesign Robust Networks against Overload-Based Cascading Failures
Cascading failures are an interesting phenomenon in the study of complex networks and have attracted great attention. Examples of cascading failures include disease epidemics, traffic congestion, and electrical power system blackouts. In these systems, if external shocks or excess loads at some nodes are propagated to other connected nodes because of failure, a domino effect often occurs with d...
